Use of Fenton Reagent in the Degradation of Reactive Turquoise in Aqueous Medium

Abstract


Wastewaters from the textile and dye finishing industries require complex treatment for efficient removal of color and other compounds existent in the dyeing and rising baths (heavy metals, organic matter, surfactants, additives and dyes). Especially, dyes have obtained unfavorably known as hazardous substances due to their toxic nature. They are also considered to be resistant to biodegradation. Recently, oxidation processes have received great attention because it is possible to degrade organic compounds and color from wastewaters.

 

This paper evaluates the degradation of Reactive Turquoise dye by Fenton oxidation process. The effects of varying the parameters of ferric ion and hydrogen peroxide concentrations, as well as pH and mixing speed on the reaction rate were determined. Optimum conditions were found to be pH of 4, hydrogen peroxide-to-iron ratio as mg/L of 60:80 and 100 rpm. The optimized parameters (pH, amount of ferric ion and hydrogen peroxide, temperature and mixing speed) allowed reaching removal efficiencies up to 94.28%. The experimental data were analyzed using the zero, first and second-order and Behnajady-Modirshahla-Ghanbery (BMG) kinetic models. BMG model provides the best correlation of the data
