Ozonation Influence on Aerobic Stabilization of Indsutrial Wastewater Sludge for Sludge Reduction – 2013

Abstract


The treatment and disposal of excess wastewater sludge is the main problem all over the world because of environmental, economical, social and legal factors. Besides, because  industrial wastewater treatment plant’s sludges are generally considered as hazardous waste they must sufficiently stabilized before disposal to the landfills. So, management of industrial wastewater treatment sludge is also the most important subject in Turkey in terms of both environmental and technical implementations. Especially, Activated Sludge Processes are widely used biological processess in Turkey same as all over the world for industrial wastewater  treatment But, one of the main important problem of these processes is the high and mostly hazardous sludge production. Thus, waste sludge from this process requires additional tretament prior to its’ final disposal  the cost of sludge disposal makes up nearly half of the total operational costs of WWTP.

So, in this study, aerobic stabilization of industrial wastewater sludge, occuring from an Organised Industrial District, with ozone were assessed. 5 sludge reactors which was applied different ozon contact time (R1=0, R2=8, R3=10, R4=20, R5=26 mg O3/gr TSS) were run and aerobic sludge stabilization was assessed after approximately 29 days for all reactor. The best results were obtained at fifth reactor (R5) which have approximately 30 minute ozon contact time (R5=26 mg O3/gr TSS).  The changes in the VSS, SS and Total COD concentrations in R5 were found cosistent with in literature studies carried out for industrial sludges. On the other hand, when these results were assessed in terms of investment cost, the effect of the ozonation on aerobic stabilization of this industrial sludge was not found satisfactory.
