Fenton Like Oxidation of Procion Red MX-5B Using Metal Impregnated Organic Waste Catalyst

Abstract


In this study, the catalytic performance of the metal impregnated activated carbon catalyst on the Fenton oxidation of the azo dye Procion Red MX-5B was investigated. The activated carbon was prepared from walnut shells by chemical activation method. In the chemical activation, KOH was used as the activation reagent. The effect of several parameters such as temperature, pH, catalyst loading and initial hydrogen peroxide concentration on the degradation and decolorization efficiencies of Procion Red MX-5B were evaluated for an initial dye concentration of 100 mg/L. According to the results, generally the degradation and decolorization efficiencies increased with increasing the temperature and the catalyst loading. However, increasing pH caused a dramatic decrease in both decolorization and degradation. The optimum reaction conditions were determined as 0.1 g/L of catalyst loading, reaction temperature at 50oC, initial H2O2 concentration, 2 mM, and pH=3. At these optimum conditions 68.7 % degradation and 97.1 % decolorization efficiencies were obtained.
