Removal of Cadmium Using Electrocoagulation Process in Drinking and Using Water Nearby Oil Fields in Diyarbakir

Abstract


In recent years, increasing of usage and popularity of electrocoagulation process is observed in Europe and South America countries. In this study, removal of cadmium has been investigated by the method of electrocoagulation from drinking and using water near oil fields. Samples have been collected quarterly from the drinking and using water nearby oil production fields in Diyarbakir during the one year period and the content of the cadmium has been monitored. Also, samples of water have been taken from 42 points by determining coordinates. It has been found that concentration of cadmium in the samples was approximately 6 µg/L. It has been determined that cadmium concentration in the samples are higher than limit value of standarts of drinking water WHO 3 µg/L and TSE 266,  5 µg/L. According to World Health Organization classification (1993), cadmium is first class carciogenic. For this reason it is very important to remove in drinking and using water.

Fe electrodes have been used for the cadmium of removal by electrocoagulation.  For the starting concentration 500 µg/L, the effect of the strength of the current, the duration of the current, the voltage and pH parameters have been investigatedand respectively with the optimum 1.25 ampere, 25 minute, 30 volt and 3.50 were determined. Under these conditions, the treatment efficiency was identified 95.94%.  In conclusion, it was suggested that cadmium of drinking and using water near oil fields could be removed used by iron electrodes and electrocoagulation process.
