Abstract

The expansion of cage aquaculture has increased concerns on the health of the marine environmentin coastal areas. The present study discusses critical field factors on studying the impact of cage farms. Solids accumulation is a reliable, fast and inexpensiveparameter that can be used successfully in impact studies compared to other chemical or biological parameters. However, other important on site parameters including current speed, bathymetry, fish feeding rates, the properties of feed and fecal particles should also be measured accurately in order to assess the effects of cage farms on the environment. oweverWhen integrated with modeling tools, this information can be used to predict the potential impact of cage farms on marine environment before its establishment or as a management tool during operation.
