Abstract

This study contributed to the research on alternative uses of lignite coals having a great potential in our country. As it is known, adsorption is the widespreadly used technique in refining the volatile organic compounds containing significantly unfavorable toxic effects. Furthermore, active carbon is also a widespreadly used adsorbent. This work will help the understanding and application of the treatment of volatile organic compounds which have carcinogenic effect even in trace levels in waters. Therefore removal of these compounds from waters are important considerably. As a result this work investigates possible hazardous compounds removal from water. These compounds are investigated in Europe and limit values for drinking waters were established. However in Turkey attentions were paid in recent years to these compounds. In the excession period of Turkey to the EU regulations about these compounds will be adopted and the analyses control of these compounds will be mandatory. Activated carbon from lignite were produced using modified method. The combination of the factors, namely KOH dosage, HCl washing enhanced significantly the sorbent activity. Removal of, %97, %97, %98, %98, for Chloroform, Bromodichloromethane, Dibromochloromethane, Bromoform, respectively were achived by the use of Ermenek activated carbon. Removal of, %92, %80,3, %84,5, %93,17, for Chloroform, Bromodichloromethane, Dibromochloromethane, Bromoform, respectively were achived by the use of Ilgın activated carbon. And Removal of, %85, %74, %81, %90, for Chloroform, Bromodichloromethane, Dibromochloromethane, Bromoform, respectively were achived by the use of Beyşehir activated carbon. Adsorption isotherm data were fitted to both Freundlich and D-R models
