Abstract

Rapidly growing of world population cause unplanned urbanization and unhealthy industrialization. Hence, it occurs naturally environmental and health problems and this affects negatively the lives of living beings. One of the most important environmental problems in urban areas is the urban traffic which causes also noise pollution. Nowadays the most important thing of the environmental problems that adversely affect human health is noise pollution.

One of the most important steps of this process is the creation of noise maps which detect traffic noise levels that occur in junctions. Therefore, to deliver more effective solutions to these environmental problems by examining the spatial dimension, it is needed to use Geographic Information Systems.

In this study, noise values were measured at a certain periodicity caused by traffic in large junctions in province Konya of Selcuk district. In the designated points, noise measurements at junctions were determined maximum noise levels (Lmax), minimum noise levels (Lmin) and the equivalent noise levels (Leg) were obtained and ArcGIS10 noise maps were constructed at junctions with the help of Geographic Information System software. With the help of these maps, the impacts to environment and region were investigated and also spatial analyzes were conducted.
